Japanese division integrated into chemicals multinational, overcoming resistance The Japanese division of a Western specialty chemical multinational was actively resisting head office initiatives for global integration. Salzer Consulting was asked to project manage the integration process. Resolution of internal disputes and a renewed sense of cooperation were achieved. The division was fully integrated into the global company, and was transformed from a loss-maker into the company’s most profitable division. Previously, all head office initiatives had failed. Senior management in Japan was reluctant to change and was avoiding downsizing through passive resistance. The company was split internally, resulting in a confused workforce and mounting losses. Failed initiatives needed to be replaced with a change program, initiated and led by the Japanese management, if it was to succeed. Salzer Consulting convinced the Japanese senior management team that change was beneficial to their staff and to Japan. This resulted in Salzer Consulting facilitating the implementation of the changes at a pace in line with head office requirements. The local management team exceeded downsizing targets and led the Behaviour Management Program. Younger managers and engineers became more deeply involved in decision-making, and senior management regained the respect and loyalty of middle managers and workers.
