Multi-hiring in North & South East Asia for Australian agricultural commodity trading group

A leading Australian agricultural commodity trading group was restructuring their Asia operations, dividing their regional headquarters into two offices located in China and South East Asia, in order to maximise their growth potential.

Requirements:

The client required high level assistance as they sought to develop their regional sales and marketing business. Salzer Consulting was brought on board to assist in the strategic appointment of key regional and marketing managers who were to be based locally in various Asia regions.

Process:

Salzer Consulting closely collaborated with the company’s project team, which required an in depth understanding of the company’s strategic plans, corporate cultural issues and current HR challenges to ensure the best qualified candidates were brought forward. In addition this is a highly specialised industry in which the client was already known to all the key players.

Salzer Consulting’s multi-country project team conducted an exhaustive search of the industry, contacting hundreds of people in the agricultural trading industry in order to find the top talent within the industry who could drive through real changes and lead the company in their next stage of growth.

Key Issues:

Salzer Consulting’s search encompassed over eight countries in the region, as well as an internal search within the client’s company to ensure that potential candidates were not overlooked. The multi-country, multi-position nature of the search demanded the ability to overcome logistical challenges within a strict timeframe, as well as the ability to provide a consistent approach to the interview process in order to provide a “level playing field” for all candidates.

The specific nature of the search required Salzer Consulting’s project team to develop a technical knowledge of the industry. This facilitated an in-depth interrogation of the candidates’ skills, and an accurate assessment of their capabilties.

As with many Australian companies in Asia, this company was confonted by the challenge of localising very senior positions. The Salzer Group’s processes met this challenge head-on and filled the majority of positions with locally based senior executives, and negotiated local packages for all incumbents.

Outcome:

Salzer Consulting successfully managed the client’s valuable time and resources to source high level candidates and assist in the initial negotiation to bring them on board. The transition of these key players into the newly established offices was very smooth and the company’s operations in the region are benefiting as a result.
